PROJECT "WATER FOR THE HORN OF AFRICA"

Tuscany Region - 2012-2013


The project, funded by the Tuscany Region (decree no. 5946 of 03/12/2012), for a duration of 24 months, addresses the theme of improving access to and management of water resources, supporting the improvement of sanitary conditions, and strengthening the management capacities of available water resources for domestic and agricultural use.


The Implementing Body is the Shalom Onlus Movement in partnership with:

- DICA ETS


DICA ETS collaborates as a technical entity to support the technical-administrative management of the Project, aiming to increase the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of interventions. In particular, it is responsible for preparing and submitting project documentation for reporting to the lead partner and project partners; collects all financial documentation produced by the lead partner and project partners, and handles financial reporting.


The project is implemented in four countries in the Horn of Africa and in the following specific areas:

  • Ethiopia: Oromia Region, Siraro Woreda, West Arsi Zone, SNNPR Region, Wolayta Zone, Damot Pulasa Province, Ololà Village;

  • Kenya: Isiolo County, Merti and Sericho Localities, Meru District; Ngong City, Bunyore Village, Vihiga District,

  • Somalia: Guricel Locality in Guricel District, Gargaduud Region; Mataban, Qodqod, and Girigir Localities in Mataban District, Hiraan Region.

The General Objective of the Project is to improve access to and proper management of water resources through strengthening the capacities of users, local authorities, and management structures, and implementing low-cost water distribution systems that facilitate access for domestic and/or agricultural use, optimizing resources, and safeguarding the environment.


The Specific Objective is to achieve efficient, sustainable, and participatory management of water resources for domestic and productive use in the Siraro and Wolayta districts (Ethiopia), Isiolo and Vihiga (Kenya), Guriel (Somalia) through activities such as: the construction of infrastructure to improve access to and availability of drinking water in intervention communities; the construction of infrastructure to improve service quality in schools; training to strengthen and improve knowledge of hygiene and health at the community level; formation of committees for the integrated and participatory management of water resources present.
